Former prime minister and PTI founder Imran Khan is showing significant recovery in his eye condition, according to a detailed medical report issued after his examination on February 15.
A two member medical board comprising Prof Dr Nadeem Qureshi, Head of the Vitreoretinal Department at Al Shifa Trust Eye Hospital Rawalpindi, and Prof Dr Muhammad Arif Khan, Head of Ophthalmology at PIMS Islamabad, conducted the evaluation.
The report states that Imran Khan’s vision has improved considerably. Without glasses, his visual acuity was recorded as 6 by 24 partial in the right eye and 6 by 9 in the left eye. After correction with glasses, vision improved to 6 by 9 partial in the right eye and 6 by 6 in the left eye.
Doctors noted that both eyes had clear corneas and no signs of active inflammation. The front portion of the eyes appeared stable. Importantly, there were no signs of abnormal new blood vessel formation.
In the right eye, however, doctors observed retinal hemorrhages in all four quadrants along with a few cotton wool spots. A mild peripheral hemorrhage was also seen. Despite this, the macular swelling is resolving. The foveal contour is visible and the retina remains attached, which doctors consider a positive sign.
The left eye was described as within normal limits, with a healthy optic disc, normal blood vessels and a clear macula.
One of the most encouraging findings was the reduction in central macular thickness from 550 to 350 microns. This decrease indicates that the treatment is working effectively. The board noted that vision in the affected eye has improved from 6 by 36 to 6 by 9 partial, calling it substantially good at this stage of recovery.
Doctors have advised continuation of prescribed eye drops and recommended that the second dose of anti VEGF therapy be administered as scheduled. Further investigations, including OCT angiography and fundus fluorescein angiography, will be carried out after completion of the treatment course.
The report also mentions that senior political leaders, including Barrister Gohar Khan and Allama Raja Nasir Abbas, visited PIMS and were briefed about Imran Khan’s condition. His personal physicians were also consulted over an extended phone call.
Following the detailed briefing, both the visiting leaders and personal doctors expressed satisfaction with the treatment so far and showed confidence in the medical team’s recommendations.
Overall, the medical board’s assessment indicates steady and measurable progress in Imran Khan’s eye health, with doctors hopeful of further stabilization through continued treatment.
